Ontario Is In Need Of Addiction Workers, Here’s Why

November 4th, 2016 / By triOS College

Forward-thinking countries have found much better results in combating addiction once they stopped treating suffering addicts like criminals. Rehabilitating people and eventually reintegrating them into society requires a feeling of psychological safety that only comes from a dedicated network. Those supporters are addiction workers. They are the dedicated agents who transform the province’s goal of eliminating addiction into a reality.

Addiction workers can help people who suffer from addiction rehabilitate so that they can eventually reintegrate back into society.

Why Does Ontario Need Them?

Like every other province, some of Ontario’s citizens live in environments that expose them to very dangerous situations and living conditions. These people need help to break free of those conditions and rise above the addictions that follow them afterward.

“More than 6.7 million people are living with a mental illness or addiction today. If we include family members and caregivers, these problems impact almost everyone in some way.” – Ontario Mental Health and Addictions Alliance

Rehabilitation is a long and difficult process that requires the expertise of an addictions worker for success. Joining triOS’ Addiction Worker program means signing up for a career of human connection and improving lives.

Do They Have Government Funding?

Thankfully, Ontario is committed to helping people suffering addictions. It can be difficult to see why money goes into one area and not another. But, if we take a step back to look at the big picture, it’s clear that the province is funding a holistic solution that curbs addiction at its source instead of just addressing the symptoms.

Together with mental illness treatment plans, Ontario’s strategy to solve addictions includes providing $138 million through the Local Health Integration Network. The province has also dedicated $11 billion in funding for rehabilitation programs at certain hospitals, complete with their own facilities.

“According to a 2006 study by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, the total societal cost of substance abuse in Canada is nearly $40 billion, or $1,267 for every Canadian.” – Ontario Mental Health and Addictions Alliance

$50 million is going into poverty reduction, mitigating the environmental factors that facilitate addiction. This is a long-term plan that treats negatively affected people as well as the root causes.

How Do Addiction Workers Help?

This is where addiction workers enter the picture. They dedicate their careers to helping negatively affected people lift themselves out of addiction cycles, making them indispensable for the province-wide effort to curb addiction. They are also crucial in preventing backsliding once they successfully help their charges break the addiction cycle.

The next stage in Ontario’s plan is to provide housing for people suffering from addictions that come with the staff to support the residents. Addiction workers are be crucial for this stage as well because they provide the fabric of that support network for recovering residents.
