Meet Your Instructors – Melisa Luong
October 31st, 2023
Melisa’s lifelong fascination with exercise science, cultivated through her experiences as a competitive athlete, is what initially drew her to physiotherapy. Her personal journey through injuries and rehabilitation has deepened her appreciation for the physiotherapy profession and its transformative impact on people’s lives.
As a registered physiotherapist with 7 years of clinical experience, Melisa has worked with a diverse range of injury populations, including sports injuries, motor vehicle accident injuries, and workplace injuries. In addition to her clinical work, Melisa actively manages a cancer rehabilitation program at a non-profit organization. Her commitment to teaching extends beyond the classroom, as she also coaches girls’ club volleyball. Melisa’s enthusiasm for teaching stems from her role as a physiotherapist, where patient education is integral to the rehabilitation process. Inspired by her mentors and instructors, she embraces the opportunity to share her knowledge and help others achieve their potential.
Melisa keeps her curriculum aligned with evolving industry trends and developments by contributing to curriculum development, sharing her clinical experiences, and integrating them into practical exam questions and role-play scenarios. Her commitment ensures students are well-prepared to adapt and succeed in a rapidly changing professional landscape.
Melisa notes that aspiring students should approach the field with an open mind and a strong desire to learn. Adaptability to evolving assessment and treatment techniques is key, says Melisa, and students should be open to refining their rehabilitation methods continuously. Staying flexible rather than sticking to a comfortable routine is a pathway to success. She emphasizes the importance of developing a strong rapport with patients as a key attribute for success in the physiotherapy assistant profession. Beyond the technical skills, the ability to effectively communicate and connect with patients is invaluable. Melisa believes that the rise of virtual physiotherapy sessions, especially in the wake of the pandemic, is expected to continue, improving accessibility for individuals who may have otherwise struggled to access these services. Additionally, the development of apps for exercise program management is likely to play a larger role in the industry.
