Do you have what it takes to become a police officer?

London currently employs a force of over 600 for a community of 350,000 people. Becoming a law enforcement agent is more complicated than simply applying. You need to understand the process and set yourself apart from the other candidates.

As the Canadian population ages and grows, the demand for law enforcement officers will only increase. Retirements will result in more available posts. How can you position yourself to jump into this role?

Canadian police use a community policing approach, which means they work with you and your community to prevent crime and address safety concerns.

Physical Preparation

The Cadet “PIN” test, developed by the Ontario Fitness Awards Program, evaluates candidates on physical criteria. This includes upper-body strength (push-ups), flexibility, core strength, and cardiovascular endurance.

Preparation includes more than simply getting stronger. Study the program. Look at the expected abilities. Much like a written test, you should focus your efforts on the areas specified.

OACP Certificate

To become a police officer, all candidates must possess an OACP Certificate. This is a program developed by the Ontario Association of Police Chiefs, administered for London Police by ATS.

There are 3 stages for this certificate: the aptitude test, the communication test, and the medical/physical evaluation. In essence, the first two tests measure your ability to reason, organize information, and communicate that information both written and orally. The third test measures physical abilities, as well as hearing, vision, and general health. More detailed information can be found here.

This certificate represents the most important aspect of the process. Preparation for the aptitude and communication tests is as important as any physical challenge.

Putting Yourself Ahead

Preparation and independent learning is difficult without any guidance. Even if you understand the process, there is no guarantee of success. Only the best candidates are chosen to become police officers in London. How do you become the best candidate?

London requires enforcement officers to be 18 years of age. For those still in—or on the verge of—completing a secondary school diploma, look into co-op programs. In 2012, the London Police Service received the Employer Champion Award from the government of Ontario for their role in providing civilian co-op placements for students. This is a valuable experience for prospective officers.

Post-secondary options can be even more beneficial. The police foundations course provides students with the knowledge and experience they need to succeed during examinations. Mainly taught by retired officers, you will put yourself ahead of other candidates by preparing yourself to immediately jump into your career.

A criminology course can also benefit potential candidates. Having a thorough understand of criminal theory will put you on the path to becoming an excellent investigator. Remember, police work isn’t only about high-speed chases and conflict. Enforcement agents are expected to properly manage crime scenes and help solve complex problems.
